Sparse representations for modeling environmental acoustic scenes, application to train stations soundscapes

چکیده
Our daily life happens in a world of dense acoustic environments. This is especially the case in train stations, where soundscapes are usually very complex. In this paper, we will investigate how Non Negative Matrix Fac-torization methods can be used to obtain a low rank spectrogram approximation, composed of spectral templates that can be related to some salients events like footsteps, whistles, etc.. . We thus assume here that the scene can be characterized by a few salient events that occur several times within the scene. We also assume that even if the acoustic realizations of those events cannot be considered in isolation, those realizations have similar spectro temporal properties. We here consider 66 recordings made in French train stations, where individual salient events have been manually annotated. We then assess the ability of the methods to extract meaningful components by comparing the activations of those components within the scene to the manually annotated ones. Experiments demonstrate that enforcing sparsity on the activations, i.e. constraining that only a few components is active at a time, has a positive effect.

Determining the desirability of the soundscapes of the Timchehs of Tabriz Bazaar based on objective and subjective assessments
In the present study, in order to explain the desirability of the soundscapes of the Timchehs of Tabriz Bazaar, Sound Pressure Level (SPL) and Reverberation Time (RT) have been measured as objective variables of acoustic behavior. Using descriptive questionnaire, subjective assessments were used to determine the quality of soundscape. The research seeks to answer the question of how the spatial...
متن کاملCognition of soundscapes and other complex acoustic scenes
The fields of soundscapes, music cognition and audio quality have many similarities. Researchers in these areas are all dealing with perception and cognition of complex acoustic scenes. To date, there has been little cross-fertilisation between them. This paper examines some key concepts and results from soundscapes, music and audio. It is shown that perceptual dimensions, categories, and figur...

This paper develops ideas on moving “soundscapes” into the mainstream of activity of environmental noise. Such a move has value in introducing a new dimension aimed at catching political attention and the engagement of other professions in acoustic management of outdoor environments. “Quiet Areas” the EU Directive on Environmental Noise requires “preserving environmental noise quality where it ...
متن کاملAre Sparse Representations Rich Enough for Acoustic Modeling?
We propose a novel approach to acoustic modeling based on recent advances in sparse representations. The key idea in sparse coding is to compute a compressed local representation of a signal via an over-complete basis or dictionary that is learned in an unsupervised way. In this study, we compute the local representation on speech spectrogram as the raw “signal” and use it as the local sparse c...
متن کاملSoundscapes of Urban Parks in and around Bhubaneswar and Puri, Odisha, India: A Comparative Study
Anthropogenic noise is debatably one of the most common threats to national parks' resources. Park visitors and workers generally suffer from adverse effects of noise from on- and off-road vehicles. The parks, studied here, are located in strictly urban areas, surrounded by streets with intense vehicle traffic. This study assesses the soundscape of urban parks in two cities of Odisha State, on ...
